What is Slash Pile Burning?

Slash is the leftover tree limbs, tops, and other residue left by logging activities. Over the summer and fall this material dries out, and in winter when fire risk is low, it is piled together and burned under safe, controlled conditions.

Pile burning is one of the primary tools BC forestry companies use to manage fuel loads on the land base, reduce wildfire risk, and promote healthy forest regeneration.

Regulations & Safety

The Open Burning Smoke Control Regulation establishes strict rules governing what can be burned, where fires can be located, the atmospheric venting conditions that must be present, and how long the burning can last. Torrent strives to ensure all regulations and safety precautions are followed diligently on every project.

Torrent works directly with licensees and ensures full regulatory compliance on all burn projects. Our experienced crew supervisors are trained in burn plan requirements and on-site safety procedures.

A Day in the Field

A full crew truck is driven to the block by the foreman. Depending on site access, an ATV or snowmobile is used to reach the piles. Workers walk between piles carrying driptorches, setting each pile alight in sequence. Crews monitor burns throughout the shift to ensure safe, complete combustion.

  • Valid driver's license is an asset; ability to operate ATVs or snowmobiles is helpful
  • Work is primarily based in the Quesnel and Likely surrounding areas
  • Priority given to returning Torrent planters, but new applicants considered
  • Work is weather and snowpack dependent — flexibility is important
